cre·a·tiv·i·ty

Noun:
The use of the imagination or original ideas, esp. in the production of an artistic work.

What is Creativity? Creativity is a word boasting a magnitude of stature in today’s society. Today, we are going to explore the idea of ’creativity’ or ‘creativeness’ and take it off it’s pedestal.

The word creativity is very often associated with the revolutionary minds of Albert Einstein and William Shakespeare and in modern day with the late Steve Jobs (CEO – Apple) and ‘the Google guys’. Undoubtedly, their works highlight creativity on a substantial scale – known to the world. However, creativity is also developed and implemented on a much smaller scale – often unknown to the world.

So, precisely, what is creativity? Think of one person that you deem to be creative… Conventionally thinking you may think of someone that is involved in science, literature or the arts but I encourage you to think wider. Derren Brown? Jimmy Choo? Jim Carey? Lionel Messi? Michael McIntyre… Think lower scale gain. Think of someone you know personally… A school teacher? A politician? A boyfriend planning his proposal? The word creativity lies with what you deem to be creative.

Case study: When teaching a group of six year old children poetry (A study into the Teaching and Learning of Poetry in Primary Schools); I took the group on a mental-guided journey. I encouraged them to think of a place to start their journey, for example, where the wind is blowing heavily or the sun is shining brightly to generate a visual stimulus. After a group discussion we started to write our own poems. One poem read:

“One sunny day I sor cloudz dancin in the breez
And the buterflys fluterin in the sky” [sic]

[Sic] means intentionally mis-spelt

What word would you use to describe this? Imaginative? adventurous? creative? If you deem this to be creative, then I agree. You evidently appreciate creativity on a small scale. Without further ado, I present to you, the punchline…
If a six year old can be creative, you can too!

So, what is creativity? Not everyone will be academically minded, but everyone has a mind, which has the capacity to be creative, imaginative and intelligent in any aspect or field.
